Happy New Year!

Been a while since my last post as usual but wanted everyone to know I survived season. Getting back to a regular schedule again and happy about that. The winter has been mild and very happy about that. Rufus is happy as we have made trips to the park We went today but didn't take any pics. Here are some from a previous visit or 2.

We have some geese pictures too. I have shared all these at Google Plus but not here. I will be trying to check in weekly now that my schedule is normal again. I have 2 3 day weekends in February ahead. I am taking off for my Birthday and for the Polar Plunge, No I am not plunging but I will be videoing it for YouTube. It is our small towns 4th annual and I am ready lol. Oh yeah here is some geese and other shots.

Made Creamy Chicken Caesar pizza last night. I have been making my own using Jiffy Crust mix and my toppings. The First was a BBQ chicken with Sweet Baby Rays Sauce , red onion and Gouda cheese. We loved it so the next one was Tostada pizza and it was a hit too. Last nights was just as popular. May get some pizza pics next week. I am thinking tostada pizza for the Superbowl. I am seeing both a Philly steak pizza and Reuben pizza in my future too. Have a Fantastic week Friends!! \_/

Time of the Season!

Well the Season is here at work. I start working 6 days a week this week. I will be off on Sundays for about the next 8 weeks. It's a fun time at work as we are busy all day. I help with emails too now so I always have plenty to do it seems. We have lots of new people to meet and have fun with this time of year. Most start all nervous as they just had a week of cramming our policies and systems into their brains. They then find out that was just the sales part. There's another class that teaches you how to be a "customer service specialist" in a mere 4 hours lol. I wanted to make sure Rufus and I got a little woods time in on our 1 day off so we went to the park this morning and had a great time. It was very windy but not bad down by the creek. Most of our fall colors have fallen but still a nice blend. It's going to be a great season I am liking the way it is starting. Have fun and smile my friends!

Busy Busy Brookstone

It has been one busy week at work so far. The time has been flying by as it's been one call after another and mostly sales calls. The later part is the good news lol. Last year at this time it wasn't anything like it has been the last 3 weeks. We just switch gift card companies and the transition was far from smooth which added to today's confusion. Hopefully that won't be a factor long. I talk to so many nice people and that makes it a great place to work for me.

One bad thing today though. I did forget my P.C. Peepers for the first time since I bought then in July.

They are the best add on ever. No more sore neck from trying to use my bifocals. They are designed to slide in behind your lens on most glasses style. I really missed them and think I need a pair for here and there. I see purchase in my future and recommend them highly to those who sit in front of a monitor all day. I found mine at the Walmart vision center.

Season 3 is Upon Us!

Time really flies but yes my third season at Brookstone Is almost here. They have already started to hire new ones since the calls are already picking up. We have added much new stuff and the company is really trying to embrace the times with Brookstone.com, I am finding new things daily. It really gets crazy at season and I love it so lol, There is something about the rush and keeping control that I find enjoyable. The 20 hours of ot each week make me smile on paydays too. Been there 2 years almost and loving the job and my co workers are a great bunch.

Rufus loves the ride

Even If you're just warming up the car Rufus wants to be there and hanging out the window. We went to the park yesterday like we usually do and no wildlife to speak of like last week. It was too dark to video but last week we saw 7 deer when we pulled in. This week We went a little later so we would have more light and we saw nothing of course. Rufus still had a good time and I enjoyed watching him run and mark every tree there. He really is a funny dog.

The tracks run through town. I wanted to share these for no other reason than I love trains!

Well I have made it through training and start working on the phones this morning. It should go pretty smooth as I practiced most of my time yesterday. It's been a slow week but the weekend is almost upon us and I have 2 off then 6 in a row as Monday will be truck washing then I start my regular schedule of 7am to 3:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday. Our Baby didn’t make it unfortunately. He wasn't eating enough and I tried to help mom out but we were too late maybe getting started and he was just too weak. It was Chalupa’s first Baby so she was new and uncertain possibly. We were really looking forward to watching the little one grow up some before he had to move on. He will be missed and now we will look forward to anther in the future. Next time Chalupa will be more mature and
better prepared than this time as will I. Sorry to have to pass on the bad news I had hoped for many more pictures and video.

It really has been a long break from blogging. Really haven’t been taking any pictures so little to talk about and share. I did go to the city Monday and wash trucks but it had been a month since that had happened. I got a couple pics here of John working hard while I watch lol.

The best news as of late has been the weather. Fall is here and the temps are pleasant and the breeze is from the north mostly. I hope to get out some soon and get some good pictures of the colors but still a tad early for that.

Went for a ride today in the fall like weather. It was in the low 60’s here today so very cool for August indeed. For my metric friends that's 16-17C. It’s been one of our coolest Augusts ever. The electric company is going to suffer with not running our air conditioners. I don’t mind a bit either. Well as I was saying we went for a ride and stopped by some friends who were out minding the kids and the pets and working on their yard. It’s coming along with all the work they have put in.

Haven’t blogged in a few days but been lazy lately. We were out some yesterday and where we usually see turkeys we cam across a young doe and her 2 fawns. They stood there tails moving rapidly as I stopped the car. They slowly wandered off into the brush. I need to get a better camera one of these days but hope you enjoy these shots I captured. Union Covered Bridge

Union Covered Bridge State Historic Site in Monroe County, Missouri, is maintained by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources as a state historic site to preserve the Union covered bridge. Between 1849 and 1870, two uncovered bridges across the Elk Fork of the Salt River on the Paris to Fayette road failed. In 1870. four months after condemning the second bridge, the Monroe County court ordered a covered bridge to be built on this location, allocating $5,000 for it and a similar structure across the North Fork of the Salt River The bridge was built in 1871 and gets its name comes from the nearby Union Church.

In 1968 a partial restoration was completed using materials from the Mexico Covered Bridge which was destroyed the year before by flood waters. In 1970 the Union bridge was closed after structural timbers were damaged by overweight trucks. A total restoration was completed in 1988. The bridge was entered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

The bridge is a 120 foot (36.6 m) long Burr Arch span that is 17 feet 6 inches (5.3 m) wide and 12 feet high (3.7 m). Joseph C. Elliot built the bridge in 1871 from local oak. It is sided in clapboard and uses wood shingles. Two earlier uncovered bridges at this site were replaced in turn due to deterioration…….From Wikipedia

Here’s some Pictures I took when John and I went riding Sunday.

It was fully restored but floods in the last couple of years have taken their toll. The water
doesn’t get in but the debris it carries does the damage. I hope they restore it again. You can see picture of it restored and other Missouri Covered bridges at This Site. It’s at the bottom of the page but the site shares all 4 Missouri Covered bridges that survive today.

Went for a ride Sunday and found a few cool pictures to share. The coolest thing of the day was a team of draft horses pulling a farmer and sled. I am off to the big city I think today. It’s not really that big but compared to here it is. Hopefully doing some work but the rains look threatening so we will see. Hope everyone's week starts great.

Happy Bennington Battle Day Vermont

Bennington Battle Day is a state holiday unique to Vermont which commemorates the American victory at the Battle of Bennington (which actually took place in New York) during the Revolutionary War in 1777. In Bennington, there is a battle re-enactment put on by the local history foundation. Also, the town fires the oldest cannon in America, which is called the Molly Stark cannon, named after the commander John Stark's wife.

This may be the only state holiday in the US which commemorates an event that did not even happen in the state. A limestone monument that symbolizes the American victory was built in 1889 and stands over 300 feet tall in Bennington, Vermont. The Battle of Bennington is named as such, because the battle was over weapons and munitions stored where the the Bennington Battle monument now stands. This site is located in, what is now referred to as, Old Bennington, VT.

The anniversary of the battle, which is celebrated annually in Bennington, Vermont, on August 16, is held on the preceding Friday if it falls on a Saturday and the following Monday if it falls on a Sunday. Government offices in Vermont are closed and historic sites in Vermont are open free of charge to the public. Celebrations include a parade, and a battle reenactment. In addition, many museums and local organizations sponsor events throughout the town.

The Battle of Bennington was a battle of the American Revolutionary War that took place on August 16, 1777, in Walloomsac, New York, about 10 miles (16 km) from its namesake Bennington, Vermont. An American force of 2,000 men, primarily composed of New Hampshire and Massachusetts militiamen, led by General John Stark, and reinforced by men led by Colonel Seth Warner and members of the Green Mountain Boys, decisively defeated a detachment of General John Burgoyne's army led by Lieutenant Colonel Friedrich Baum, and supported by additional men under Lieutenant Colonel Heinrich von Breymann.

Baum's detachment was a mixed force of 700 composed of dismounted Brunswick dragoons, Canadians, Loyalists, and Indians. He was sent by Burgoyne to raid Bennington in the disputed New Hampshire Grants area for horses, draft animals, and other supplies. Believing the town to be only lightly defended, they were unaware that Stark and 1,500 militiamen were stationed there. After a rain-caused standoff, Stark's men enveloped Baum's position, taking many prisoners and killing Baum. Reinforcements for both sides arrived as Stark and his men were mopping up, and the battle restarted, with Warner and Stark successfully driving away Breymann's reinforcements with heavy casualties.

The battle was an important victory for the American cause, as it reduced Burgoyne's army in size by almost 1,000 men, led his Indian support to largely abandon him, and deprived him of needed supplies, all factors that contributed to Burgoyne's eventual surrender at Saratoga. The victory also galvanized colonial support for the independence movement, and played a role in bringing France into the war on the American side. The battle anniversary is celebrated in the state of Vermont as Bennington Battle Day.

Dog Days

It’s been a warm week but really a mild August for us. Usually we are around 100f and its been only near 90 most days. For my metric friends that’s like 32 instead of 37. I wonder what ever happened to us going metric. When I was a kid they had us study it and said some day we would have to know it. I still don’t know temps very well but the internet makes conversions a breeze. The humidity here adds to make it a sauna kind of feel. This year is just as humid but not as hot so can’t complain at least yet. Now that I said something it will probably warm up to 100. Forecasters are calling for a cooling trend last I saw. The corn and the beans are really growing too after the spring and summer rains we have had. I mowed the lawn today and noticed the neighbors blackberries are ready to pick. She jars them up and sells them by the quart. Hope everyone is having a good one, Rufus, the Chinchillas and myself are all in the shade sipping cool drinks .

Audrain County

I live in Mexico Missouri which is in Audrain County. It is a farming community for the most part. It Used to be the firebrick capitol of the world. The Brick plants have closed but used to employ many people here. They still talk of those days. In recent years Audrain has become the bio fuel capitol of Missouri. They grow a lot of corn and soybeans in these parts. I have been out in the farmlands the last couple of days and the corn is really growing fast. Trains bring in a lot of grains too. One of the tallest structures in town is the grain elevator. That’s something I was really thrilled with when I moved here almost 4 years ago, the train whistles. Sounds strange perhaps but I love trains. The first time I heard one going through at night it brought back good memories of yesteryear. I still enjoy hearing the 3 am trains as they announce every crossing as they pass through town and you can listen as they pass from one end to the other. I hope every one has a wonderful Tuesday and a Happy Bastille Day to all the French out there.

Wet Sunday Ride

I haven’t been doing a lot lately other than playing with this machine I have. I was getting a bunch of errors and had to overwrite my windows. That meant going back and getting programs reinstalled and bookmarks updated. Its been quite a job really. I was hoping it would solve all my problems and trust me, it has helped. I am afraid I have a hard drive going bad too though and still get the occasional crash. I am hoping it lasts awhile longer as funds to replace could be an issue right now with me not working at the moment. Hopefully something will come up soon for me. I did get out yesterday with my friend John and we took a ride through the county. I was able to get a few pictures but the light wasn’t the greatest. Went over to Plunkett Park today. Well actually last night and today Rufus and I went there. They have a sprayer type fountain in the lake that they light up at night. I think it may be to add oxygen to the water. They actually stock trout in it during certain months. I saw some cat tails there the other day and had to go back for a picture of them. It's Ian's 23rd Birthday today so I want to wish him a Happy One. He is in Kansas City visiting his friend Ashley for a week or so and going out for Bar-B-Que tonight. Kansas City is famous for that. I hope all of you are having a good one and smiling.

Fireworks 2009

Hard to believe but the storms did stop long enough for the fireworks yesterday. It rained from early morning till afternoon then off and on after that. We went out and scoped the 2 places that had displays last night and found a really good spot near the Garfield Park fireworks. Rufus felt it was a bit too close lol as he learned last night he doesn't fit under the seat. I stood at the car window and petted him as we watched. He was fine but ready to get back to the house and feel safe again. Where we were was loud as they would echo off the buildings behind us. I had never done any night video so it was a first for me with our camcorder. It blurrs in places but not bad I thought considering it was night. I was going to take some stills with the camera but didn't have any fresh batteries with me. I did get a couple shots though I will share below. I also took a picture of the old stables they are restoring. The building is around 114 years old. I hope you enjoy the views and this finds you having a good weekend.

Hate to see such a mature tree fall like that but glad no one was injured and it

Fallen and Can't Get Up

Yesterday was the warmest day maybe this year for us. It was a humid dog too. it got nice in the evening though as we had a big storm with big wind move in and blew the humidity away. It went from hard to breathe to hey this is great. With the storm come the checking of windows to make sure nothing will get wet when the rain starts. It also means rolling up the windows on the car as well. Our car has a leak on the passenger side door even if the glass is up. In a good rain the door starts to fill and you can hear it in the sloshing when you drive it the next day. The sound of it takes me back to my parents pickup truck. In it you could hear the gas in the tank at times. In a big rain it will start to fill the floor on the passenger side as well. I went ahead and moved it to the garage so it would stay dry, as I did I notice police cars up the street. I couldn’t really tell what was happening but they had the street blocked off at the corner and a fairly large crowd of people watching. Later after the rain was over I took Rufus out for his last break before bed and notice that where the police had been looks darker than usual . I am straining to see what's up without having to take a walk and then I get a break, A car comes up the street and I can see the fallen tree across the road. It was a large one about a block north of us. It didn’t do us like the one on the other corner last year when we lost power for a few hours. This one took out some lines but never affected us here. This morning Rufus and I walked up and got a couple photos. I also had noticed yesterday the mimosa tree blooming outside and took a couple of it. Hotter today they are telling us so I plan to hide most of the afternoon in the a/c. I hope this finds all my friends doing well and enjoying themselves. Take great care and have a good Wednesday.

It’s starting to storm here but will pass shortly they say. Its going to be muggier than ever by this afternoon. Hippie’s parents bought her an air condition yesterday. It is in the bedroom and like an oasis in there. I moved Taco and Chalupa in there as they are always wanting to wear the nice fur coats. They will appreciate it as much as Hippie does lol. I am not going to complain about the weather though as they say it’s going to be hotter tomorrow and heck it isn’t even July yet. I do want to congratulate a couple of fellow bloggers while thinking of them. Congrats to Crystal Jigsaw on the new additions. Her dog Sparky gave birth to a litter of 6 and I read they are doing well. Glad to hear the good news and always glad to hear all is well. I would also like to send congrats out to Ayedeco. She recently won a competition of Sewing Boxes and hers won. Its a fantastic looking piece, I was very impressed. The competition was close as she won by like 7 votes or so. I recommend checking them out if you haven’t already. While speaking of fellow bloggers I want also to mention Gry's Photos.She has some very stunning pictures of Norway and always a treat to view. I follow several blogs and am a religious reader of them. They are all good for one reason or another and recommend checking them all out. On that note let me say I have nothing new to blog about. I hope everyone is doing well and enjoying themselves today. I leave a song that is accurate and true and a long time favorite of mine.

RIP Bob Bogle

Legendary guitarist Bob Bogle, a founding member of 1960s instrumental group The Ventures, has died, his band announced in a statement Tuesday.

He was 75.

Bogle, who founded the group with Don Wilson in 1958, was a pivotal figure in the band's biggest hits, which included the seminal surf classic "Walk Don't Run" as well as the theme tune to the popular television series "Hawaii Five-O."

The Ventures said in a statement on their website that Bogle died on Sunday. Media reports said Bogle had fought a long battle with cancer.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob's family at this terrible time, especially his beloved wife, Yumi, who has been the light of his life for so many years," the statement said.

"The Ventures' members are completely devastated, and share the pain of this loss with all our friends and fans. The music world has lost a true original and an innovator -- may all our wonderful memories console us.

Dinner time

Rainy stormy night and day here. Nothing new as of late. A fellow blogger commented he was glad we got it too as it rains a lot where he lives. Well considering the weather not much to share today but did take a couple pictures of dinner. I made Crab Cakes and Tomato Corn Salad. They both were very tasty. I was thrilled as I fried the crab cakes in a recently acquired cast iron skillet and no stickage. I seasoned it myself and it has worked great 2 times now. I know its a weird thing to be thrilled about but for some reason I was lol. Did have a kitchen pipe start leaking and looks like a day of plumbing tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed I will need the help. Keep healthy thoughts for Crystal too as she seems to have a pinched nerve causing her a lot of pain. Hopefully good thoughts and rest help her pain. Hope everyone had a good one today and all is going well.

Wet Thursday

Big storms last night through this area with a bunch of rain, again. It is going to be a hot humid July and August I bet. I Got a call last night at 11:06 and mind you that my phone normally never rings that late. I answer and it's my step son (Ian) who is almost 23. He is extremely excited and perhaps with a few pints in him as well. I am not sure I have known him to ever be that animated but to the point of screaming like a 60's Beatles fan. I finally get him to calm down long enough to hear “I just shook hands with Robin Trower dood”. He then screams some more & tells me he just saw him perform live. He had gone with his old buds and witnessed a God and he had to share it immediately lol. Ian plays guitar and after many years of working at it is really a fine player himself. I was a big fan of Procol Harum and Trower’s solo stuff in the 70’s. Ian has all my old vinyl now and treasures them like some ancient lost text. He got to meet him and shake hands and got his ticket autographed. He felt he had died and gone to heaven so to speak, had his cake and ate it too. He couldn’t talk long so I have to call him back today. I remember when I would that excited over a meeting like that. I was glad he called and I smiled. No I really did I think.

Not long back I almost sold Taco as he was alone and not really getting the attention I felt he needed. The day before I was to sell him I decided instead to buy him a girlfriend. They have hit it off well and maybe down the road will have some baby chins to show my friends. They are very cool pets and softer than anything most of us have ever felt. I have really enjoyed having them around and hope they are with me for many years.

Known for her powerful vocals, Taylor was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 1997, won the Blues Foundation Lifetime Achievement Ward in 1999 and was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship in 2004.

She also won a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album in 1985 for her album "Queen of the Blues."

Grammy Award-winning blues legend Koko Taylor, 80, died on June 3, 2009 in her hometown of Chicago, IL, as a result of complications following her May 19 surgery to correct a gastrointestinal bleed. On May 7, 2009, the critically acclaimed Taylor, known worldwide as the “Queen of the Blues,” won her 29th Blues Music Award (for Traditional Female Blues Artist Of The Year), making her the recipient of more Blues Music Awards than any other artist. In 2004 she received the NEA National Heritage Fellowship Award, which is among the highest honors given to an American artist. Her most recent CD, 2007’s Old School, was nominated for a Grammy (eight of her nine Alligator albums were Grammy-nominated). She won a Grammy in 1984 for her guest appearance on the compilation album Blues Explosion on Atlantic.

Born Cora Walton on a sharecropper’s farm just outside Memphis, TN, on September 28, 1928, Koko, nicknamed for her love of chocolate, fell in love with music at an early age. Inspired by gospel music and WDIA blues disc jockeys B.B. King and Rufus Thomas, Taylor began belting the blues with her five brothers and sisters, accompanying themselves on their homemade instruments. In 1952, Taylor and her soon-to-be-husband, the late Robert “Pops” Taylor, traveled to Chicago with nothing but, in Koko’s words, “thirty-five cents and a box of Ritz Crackers.”

In Chicago, “Pops” worked for a packing company, and Koko cleaned houses. Together they frequented the city’s blues clubs nightly. Encouraged by her husband, Koko began to sit in with the city’s top blues bands, and soon she was in demand as a guest artist. One evening in 1962 Koko was approached by arranger/composer Willie Dixon. Overwhelmed by Koko’s performance, Dixon landed Koko a Chess Records recording contract, where he produced her several singles, two albums and penned her million-selling 1965 hit “Wang Dang Doodle,” which would become Taylor’s signature song.

After Chess Records was sold, Taylor found a home with the Chicago’s Alligator Records in 1975 and released the Grammy-nominated I Got What It Takes. She recorded eight more albums for Alligator between 1978 and 2007, received seven more Grammy nominations and made numerous guest appearances on various albums and tribute recordings. Koko appeared in the films Wild At Heart, Mercury Rising and Blues Brothers 2000. She performed on Late Night With David Letterman, Late Night With Conan O’Brien, CBS-TV’s This Morning, National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, CBS-TV’s Early Edition, and numerous regional television programs.

She also toured to much of America and abroad to bring her sound to many. I met Koko for the first time 20 years ago. I was doing the Sunday Night Blues Show for community radio station KOPN 89.5fm. I met her several times over the years as she came to town and preformed annually. I was usually involved with the show so it meant getting to meet and greet many acts that came to show case their talents and help our small station raise funds. She was always a big draw and could count on people coming out to see the legend. She will live on forever through her recordings and the memories she has left behind.

What's in a Name

Recently I was interested in where my family name originated. I always knew that my fathers side was from Ireland but was looking to learn more and I was surprized at what I learned.
In the year 795 AD, a ship ploughed into the sands at Lambay Island just north of Howth Head on the east coast of Ireland near Dublin. Immediately from the body of the Longboat, the oarsmen rushed to attack the monastery of Saint Columkill. They slaughtered the monks, plundered the monastery for for all the gold and silver vessels they could find, and then disappeared back into the Irish Sea. The Irish Annalists, referring to the incident, describe the unwelcome arrivals as "dubh-ghaill".
The first "Doyles" had arrived in Ireland!

Members of Clan Doyle /Clann O DubhGhaill ("Dubh-Ghaill" ... pronounced "Du-Gall") take their family surname from the Irish Gaelic words meaning "Dark/Evil Foreigner"; and this is just what the indigenous Celts called the Danish Vikings who started settling in Ireland and Scotland more than 1,000 years ago.

That doesn't sound like us at all lol.

Norway's National Day

I want to take this time to say Happy May 17 to my friends from Norway. I didn't know a lot about this day and have recently made a couple friends from there so I had to find out what it was all about. May 17 is Norway's National Constitution Day. Although 2005 was the centennial of Norway’s full independence, the country’s constitution dates back further. It was, in fact, adopted at Eidsvoll on 17 May 1814. The celebrations commemorating this event centre around the children, with school bands leading processions of children waving flags all over Norway.

The 17th of May celebrations vary from place to place, but usually follow a traditional pattern that makes this a children’s day. The highlight is the children’s processions, made up of school classes marching through the local community, led by the school band. Most of the children have their own small Norwegian flag to wave, and the route is lined with enthusiastic onlookers. After the procession there are games, entertainments and film shows,

and plenty of hot dogs and ice cream.

Most people dress up in their best spring clothes, with a Norwegian flag or 17th of May ribbon pinned on their lapel. It has become increasing popular to wear national dress – the bunad – on this occasion. There are many different forms of bunad from different parts of the country, and it is a magnificent sight to see so many national costumes at one time.

May is the month when spring is in full swing in Norway, and this influences the menu chosen for the day. While hot dogs and ice creams are popular among the children, other foods that are often served are cured meats and sausages and the traditional sour cream porridge, and many people have barbecues. Desserts and cakes are also an important feature. Many schools and individual families give breakfast parties before the start of the procession.

The russ celebration – the end of 13 years of school

The 17th of May is also the day students in the last year of upper secondary school celebrate the end of 13 years of school. They call themselves russ, wear colourful overalls. High spirits are the norm and they generally have a lot of fun. They have their own processions with painted vans and busses decorated with slogans and jokes, and playing loud music.

Norwegians and people with Norwegian roots living abroad also celebrate 17th of May. Many Norwegian seamen’s churches, embassies, student associations and other Norwegian institutions arrange 17th of May processions, receptions and parties.

Norway adopted its constitution in 1814, and it is this event that is celebrated on the 17th of May. The Storting, the Norwegian parliament, held the first 17th of May celebration in 1836, and from then on the 17th of May was regarded as the national day. The first children’s processions were arranged in 1870. Since 1906, the Royal Family have gathered on the balcony of the Royal Palace in Oslo to wave to the children marching by.

I saw this in the news and thought it was so cool I had to share it.

We had a some bad storms near here couple night ago but the tornados

missed us. They were a bit north of here but we did get some big wind

and more rain. It was sunny yesterday but today a good chance for more

rain. We really could use a couple weeks of drying out. I am afraid it may

mean we are in for a humid summer. The flowers are loving it as they are

in full bloom everywhere. The grass is growing like mad too, so mowing often.

It’s starting to dry out some so we went to the woods this morning to run Rufus.

He loves to run and loves the creek. It is really turning green and a gorgeous walk

Its always a good time to get out and walk in the woods. I hope to get many pictures this summer

of our local conservation areas. I am very thankful we have them to walk and take the dog somewhere

for good running time. He always wears himself out when we get there. Beware of the ticks though

we found several each when we got home. In town we don’t get ticks but fleas can get bad if you

don’t treat for them. Soon the lake road will open for the season and we may get out to camp for a

John Luther "Casey" Jones

(March 14, 1863 – April 30, 1900)

Casey was an American railroad engineer from, Tennessee who worked for the Illinois Central Rialroad. On April 30, 1900, he alone was killed when his passenger train collided with a stopped freight train on a foggy and rainy night. His dramatic death trying to stop his train and save lives made him a folk hero who became immortalized in a popular ballad sung by his friend Wallace Saunders, an engine wiper for the IC. Due to the enduring popularity of this classic song, he has been the world's most famous railroad engineer for over a century.

On April 29, 1900 Casey was in Memphis, having driven the northbound No. 2 from Canton, when he agreed to take the southbound No. 1 because the scheduled engineer had called in sick with cramps.

On this fateful night, Casey had returned with his assigned Engine No. 384 and was asked to “double back south” on Tate’s run on No. 1 with Engine No. 382 to Canton. Had Tate not been sick, Casey would have made the run back the next day after a layover. But he loved challenges and once again was determined to "get her there on the advertised" no matter how difficult it looked.

A fast engine, a good fireman, and a light train were ideal for a record-setting run of the 188 miles from Memphis to Canton. And even though it was raining, steam trains operated best in damp conditions. But it was also quite foggy that night, which reduced visibility. And the run was well-known for its tricky curves, which could prove deadly.

With Fireman Sim Webb shoveling on coal and Casey pouring on steam they left Memphis with 6 cars at 12:50 am, 95 minutes behind schedule. The first section of the run would take Casey 102 miles south over a new section of light and shaky rails at speeds up to 80 mph. He passed through the scene of the deaths of a fellow engineer and fireman in an accident that occurred the previous November. Upon reaching Grenada he was only 40 minutes behind schedule and took on water. It was 23 miles from Grenada to Winona, Mississippi and Casey made up another 15 minutes. By the time he got to Durant, 55 miles south, he was almost on time. He was quite happy, saying at one point "Sim, the old girl's got her dancing slippers on tonight!" as he leaned on the Johnson bar. At Durant he received new orders to take to the siding at Goodman and wait for the No. 2 passenger train to pass, and then continue on to Vaughan.

Casey did as he was instructed and arrived at Goodman to take the siding. His orders also instructed him that he was to meet northbound passenger train No. 26 at Vaughan, but No. 26 was a local passenger train in two sections and would be in the siding so he would have priority over it. He pulled out of Goodman only five minutes behind. With 27 miles of fast track ahead Casey doubtless felt that he had a good chance to make it to Canton by 4:05 AM "on the advertised."

But the stage was being set for a tragic wreck at Vaughan, 15 miles away. The stopped double-header freight train No. 83 (located to the north and headed south) and the stopped long freight train No. 72 (located to the south and headed north) were both in the passing track to the east of the main line but there were more cars than the track could hold, forcing some of them to overlap onto the main line above the north end of the switch. The northbound local passenger train No. 26 had arrived from Canton earlier which had required a “saw by” in order for it to get to the “house track” west of the main line. The saw by maneuver for No. 26 required that No. 83 back up and allow No. 72 to move northward and pull its overlapping cars off the south end, allowing No. 26 to gain access to the house track. But this left four cars overlapping above the north end of the switch and on the main line right in Casey’s path. As a second saw by was being prepared to let Casey pass, an air hose broke on No. 72, locking its brakes and leaving the last four cars of No. 83 on the main line.

Meanwhile, Casey was travelling excessively fast, possibly up to 75 miles per hour toward Vaughan, unaware of the danger ahead as he was traveling through a 1.5-mile left-hand curve which blocked his view. Sim's view from the left side of the train was better and he was first to see the red lights of the caboose on the main line. "Oh my Lord, there's something on the main line!" he yelled to Casey. Casey quickly yelled back "Jump Sim, jump!" to Sim, who crouched down and jumped about 300 feet before impact and was knocked unconscious. The last thing Sim heard when he jumped was the long, piercing scream of the whistle as Casey tried to warn anyone still in the stopped freight train looming ahead. Sadly, Casey was only two minutes behind schedule about this time.

Casey reversed the throttle and slammed the airbrakes into emergency stop, but "Ole 382" quickly plowed through a wooden caboose, a car load of hay, another of corn and half way through a car of timber before leaving the track. He had amazingly reduced his speed from about 75 miles per hour to about 35 miles per hour when he impacted with a deafening crunch of steel against steel and splintering wood. Because Casey stayed on board to slow the train, he doubtless saved the passengers from serious injury and death (Casey himself was the only fatality of the collision). His watch was found to be stopped at the time of impact which was 3:52 AM on April 30, 1900. Popular legend holds that when his body was pulled from the wreckage of his train near the twisted rail his hands still clutched the whistle cord and the brake.

Just had Supper and mmmmmm mmmmmm. We had fried chicken

and mashed potatoes with milk gravy

And I want to say we have been trying these canned veggies from Margaret Holmes and I recommend them highly.

We have had the Succotash, and Cabbage and tonight we tried the squash with vadalia onions. Very delicious.

Rufus and I found a frog refuge while on a walk. We had had a couple days of rain and it made this area a wetlands. They were really loud as they sang their songs. Just had dinner and yummmy. I made burgers on the grill that were stuffed with bacon cheese and mushrooms. Couple of those and some fast food type fries made for a perfect supper. You never know how those things turn out when you start thinking of them the night before lol. They lived up to my expectations. Rufus and I made it up to Young's Creek today and what a great time he had. It was quiet and just the 2 of us for the most part. We did see one dood and also a cow that followed us for a second. Rufus was disapointed I wouldn't let him chase it. It's the end of my weekend and back to the grind tomorrow but wow what nice weather we have had the last few days. It got in the 70's today. Supposed to be a wet weekend here but I don't mind I will be flippin eggs. Have a great one Friends I hope you all have the weather we have had and get out and smile. We survived another weekend and what a weekend it was. It was Mexico Military Academy's (MMA) homecoming and a celebration they call A Walk Back In Time. We were pretty busy and had some new faces in the crowd. I didn't have time to see many faces old or new with so much to do. It runs so smooth its never really too bad. We had a new waitress start saturday. I included a pic below as well as one of Hippie. On vacume back by popular demand is Nancy. Nancy helps us out when we are short handed and has been the cavalry when needed as well. Her kids works there too every weekend. I used to cook with her brother there as well. Today was pretty fun I had to make chilr and its gonna be cooler here next few days so I made a double batch. I start with ten pounds of ground beef and I end up with a ton-o-chili lol. The soup was heat and eat but pretty tasty. It was Cheddar Potato and came in a big plastic bag frozen. You boil it until hot so very easy for me. Tomorrow's is going to be Wisconsin Cheddar. The special today was the southwest beef taco salad with ranch salsa dressing. My doctor's office came in and had 5 of them. Well friends I am now rambling and I hope this finds you with a smile. \_/

Just got back from the doctors office and yay I am doing well they tell me lol. I am losing weight and sugar levels are looking good. He's stil not happy I havn't quit smoking but hey it can't all be perfect. I am good to go for another 2 months. Hippie got the bedroom painted this week and I hung the blinds today. She really put a big effort into it so a big hand for her Yay!! I guess we will be moving in today lol. I took down the sheet wall we had in the living room and once we get the bed moved we can concentrate on the living room and getting it arranged and ready for cable to be hooked up tomorrow woo hoo. I added a couple pics to give an idea of the colors. Rufus had to help both in painting and pic taking lol.

Hey there folks I must say it feels like Monday here but I hope this finds you all having a wonderful weekend. It was an easy day at the diner and for the most part a fun day. I lost my pants twice and as i stood in my hank hills i felt regret for ever teaching the boss that trick.

(CNN) -- A dog sheltered a newborn baby abandoned by its 14-year-old mother in a field in rural Argentina until the boy was rescued, a doctor said Friday.

The abandoned infant was found in a field with this dog and her newborn puppies.

A resident of a rural area outside La Plata called police late Wednesday night to say that he had heard the baby crying in a field behind his house.

The man went outside and found the infant lying beside the dog and its six newborn puppies, said Daniel Salcedo, chief of police of the Province of Buenos Aires.

The temperature was a chilly 37 degrees, Salcedo said.

The dog had apparently carried the baby 50 meters from where his mother had abandoned him to where the puppies were huddled, police said.

"She took it like a puppy and rescued it," Salcedo said. "The doctors told us if she hadn't done this, he would have died.

"The dog is a hero to us."

Dr. Egidio Melia, director of the Melchor Romero Hospital in La Plata, said police showed up at the hospital at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday with the baby, who doctors say was only a few hours old.

Though the infant had superficial scratches and bruises and was bleeding from his mouth, he was in good shape, Melia said.

The next morning, the child's mother was driven by a neighbor to the hospital and told authorities that the 8-pound, 13-ounce infant is hers, Melia said.

The teenager was immediately given psychological treatment and was hospitalized, he said. She has said little about the incident.

The child has been transferred to a children's hospital in La Plata
